Who teaches it?
The PE teacher is responsible for teaching Archery at TMS. We are certified through the program that we received the equipment and curriculum from, the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP). This was an 8 hour course specifically teaching incorporating archery into PE programs. Ms.Bronner also has received Level 1 and Level 2 USA Archery Coach Certification, which included 16 hours of additional training and exams specific to teaching archery to students. This means if we gather interest, TMS could have an Archery team that competes with other schools in California.
Is it safe? How do you make sure?
Safety is our number one priority. For the first week students have been being trained in procedures for the archery range. TMS opted to do our archery unit indoors to insure it is a completely controlled environment. Students must pass two written tests indicating they understand how to shoot an arrow and how to be safe while doing so. The students' movements are all dictated by whistle blasts before proceeding to another area of the room. All students start safely in the waiting area. There is no archery equipment in the waiting area. Only one group is allowed in the shooting area at a time. Students enter the target area from the shooting area to retrieve their arrows AFTER all bows are secured back on the rack so there is no way to propel arrows into the target area. Once the arrows are returned to the quivers, the group that shot returns to the waiting area and sits down. Once all are seated the next group is invited to enter the shooting area and grab a bow. No arrows are shot until I a whistle blast letting students know they are allowed to shoot their arrows.
Why do I have to sign a waiver if it is safe?
We have you sign a waiver because we are using real bows and real arrows. We want to make sure all parents read the information and are aware of what their student is doing in PE. The best way for us to confirm that the information makes its way to you is by having you sign the page and have your student bring it back. Students also show their responsibility and integrity by bringing the form back in a timely manner. Archery is conducted with deliberate procedures in a controlled environment. Second behind ping pong, Archery has the lowest number of injuries compared to many of the activities conducted in PE. Archery requires mental focus, concentration and muscle control, not just speed and strength. It is a sport that recognizes excellence in students that may not otherwise feel such success in PE.
